International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation

calendar_today 06 February 2016

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a violent practice, scarring girls for life -- endangering their health, depriving them of their rights, and denying them the chance to reach their full potential. FGM is widespread. It is a global problem that goes well beyond Africa and the Middle East, where the practice has been most prevalent -- affecting communities in Asia, Australia, Europe, North and South America. And the number of girls and women at risk will only get larger if current population trends continue, wiping out hard-won gains. FGM is discrimination.

Sudan’s health sector is severely underfunded. One quarter of the population has no access to health facilities and only 19 % of primary health care facilities provide the minimum health care package. While 66 % of the functioning rural hospitals can provide basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care, less than half of them provide comprehensive emergency obstetric and neonatal care services needed to save mothers’ lives.

The armed conflict in Darfur, which escalated in early 2003, has exploited and brutalized over two million civilian, and further immobilized an already decaying infrastructure. It has caused systematic forced migration of populations across the region estimated at 2.5 million IDPs. Large numbers of displaced women are pregnant, facing delivery under dangerous conditions; others victims of violence including rape.
