About us

UNFPA is the lead UN agency for delivering a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled. UNFPA expands the possibilities for women and young people to lead healthy and productive lives.

UNFPA started working in 1969 and began working with the Government of Turkey in 1971. UNFPA Turkey activities were initially carried out on a project-by-project basis. The first multi-year Country Programme ran from 1988 to 1992. The 7th Country Programme (2021-2025) is currently underway.

For the last 50  years, UNFPA in Turkey has provided support to:

  • Promote mother and child health
  • Improve reproductive health and rights
  • Empowering young people fulfil their potential
  • Promote gender equality
  • Combat violence against women
  • Enhance collection, use, and dissemination of development data

in collaboration with state institutions, non-governmental organizations, private sector and universities.

Since 2011, UNFPA has also been supporting the humanitarian response efforts of Turkey on promoting reproductive health and combating gender based violence.

In line with the overall objectives of UNFPA, the 7th Country Programme (2021-2025) particularly focuses on the following areas:

  • Sexual and reproductive health
  • Unmet need for family planning 
  • Modern contraceptive prevalence 
  • Maternal mortality
  • Gender equality and women’s empowerment
  • Gender-based violence against women and girls
  • Child, early and forced marriages
  • Population dynamics

The 7th Country Programme contributes to the UNFPA global strategic plan transformative results by supporting the reduction of: 

(a) Maternal health risks

(b) Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies

(c) Inequalities and violence faced by the most vulnerable groups, thereby supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 (health), 4 (education), 5 (gender) 10 (disparities) and 17 (partnerships and data)

The 7th Country Programme embeds the needed transitions into the policies, budgets, institutions and regulatory frameworks, including youth, civil society, the media, the private sector, academia and other stakeholders, in line with the Decade of Action.

Ms. Khan started her assignment as UNFPA Representative to Turkiye, Country Director for Azerbaijan and Georgia in November 2024. With over 24 years of experience serving those most in need, she has led advocacy and development programmes, humanitarian response, change management initiatives, all while working with multicultural teams. She brings a passion for promoting a rights-based agenda that focuses on improving lives of women and young people in particular, through culturally sensitive approaches and evidence-based methodologies. She has previously led teams in UNFPA HQs, Algeria, China, Indonesia, Laos and Tanzania.
