calendar_today 07 October 2016

Training Programme on Demography for Public Officials will be organized by Hacettepe University in partnership with UNFPA.

UNFPA started a new partnership with Hacettepe University Institute of Population Studies in July 2016. The partnership envisages to establish an institutionalized training programme on demography for public officials to ensure evidence based policy formulation. The training programme will consist of short training courses on various aspects of demography. The first training course which will be conducted in December 2016 will be dedicated to population and development and basic demographic concepts such as fertility, mortality, migration, population trends and indicators.

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) conducted Population and Development: Programme Framework Beyond 2015 National Consultation Meeting on 24 December 2015 in Ankara. Representatives from more than 25 institutions and agencies including public sector, civil sector, universities and international organizations came together and discussed “population and development” issues within the new development agenda.

The Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), adopted in 1994, represented a remarkable consensus among 179 Governments that individual human rights and dignity, including the equal rights of women and girls and universal access to sexual and reproductive health and rights, are a necessary precondition for sustainable development, and set forth objectives and actions to accelerate such development by 2015. At the twentieth year of its implementation, the United Nations General Assembly, called for an operational review of the implementation of the Programme of Action through its resolution 65/234. In this context, as a result of a three-year review process, Framework of Actions for the Follow-up to the Programme of Action of the ICPD (ICPD Beyond 2014 Global Report) was launched by the United Nations in 2014.

United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, Turkey Country Office commenced a process for adaptation of the ICPD Global Report to Turkey in 2015 to celebrate the achievements, identify gaps and key steps for future actions. Through an advisory group, representatives of public sector, civil sector and academicians also provided their contributions to the draft report.

“Population and Development: Programme Framework Beyond 2015 National Consultation Meeting” with the aim of sharing the draft report which is the outcome of this review process with the stakeholders and discuss Turkey’s ICPD priorities, contributed to identification of key steps to achieve the targets in the Sustainable Development Agenda through working groups and with a multisectoral approach.
