UNFPA is able to expand rights and choices for all and reach the most vulnerable women, girls and young people across the world with its core resources. Every success, every result and every transformed life starts with core funding for UNFPA programmes.

In 150 countries, UNFPA is undertaking life-saving work on sexual and reproductive health, gender-based violence and child, enforced and early marriages and population dynamics. To do so, core resources and regular resources consist of the foundation for all UNFPA programmes. They allow us to work for leaving no one behind and reaching the furthest behind first.

In 2021, UNFPA continued to respond to the needs of women and girls urgently with a record of the highest performance in achieving key outputs of its four-year strategic plan. UNFPA's humanitarian operations alone reached more than 29 million, supported 1.5 million safe deliveries and assisted millions of survivors of gender-based violence. This is a success also brought by UNFPA's strong cooperation with and support for women-led civil society. With the new 2022-2025 Strategic Plan introduced this year, UNFPA is more ambitious, precise and confident with its goals, brought by its new innovative and crisis-adapted approach with the support from its Partners at Core.

Investing in core resources is smart and efficient. For each dollar of core resources raised in 2018, UNFPA mobilized an average of $2.53 of other resources. In line with the principles of aid effectiveness, core funding is the bedrock of UNFPA's operations. Because it is provided without restrictions, core funding provides flexibility to plan effectively and respond to shifting global developments and humanitarian challenges, and to the changing circumstances and needs of countries. Predictable core funding enhances the sustainability of programmes and enables capacity-building of partner governments. Every year, UNFPA must mobilize support from governments to pursue Vision 2030: zero unmet need for family planning; zero preventable maternal deaths; and zero harmful practices and gender-based violence

Core resources allow us to maintain UNFPA's global presence. When environments change or crises such as COVID-19, strike, core resources allow us to be prepared, adapt to shocks and act quickly to save lives. They allow us to respond to the needs of women and girls, in regions that may not be in the public spotlight. No result, not even those reported as achieved with other sources of funding, would have been achieved without core resources underpinning the work of the United Nations.

UNFPA encourages multi-year core contributions, which enable programmes to be delivered in a predictable and sustainable manner. In 2021, the top 10 contributors to core resources were Sweden, Norway, Germany, Netherlands, Finland, Denmark, United States, Switzerland, Japan, and Canada.

UNFPA delivers results globally, UNFPA in 2021 alone achieved;

  • To prevent 12.7 million unintended pregnancies
  • To avert 39 million maternal deaths
  • To prevent 5 million unsafe abortions
  • To provide 1.9 million survivors of female genital mutilation with essential services
  • To reach 4.9 million marginalized girls by life-skills programmes
  • To provide 2.3 million survivors of female genital mutilation with essential services
  • To avert 82,000 new HIV infections
  • To assist 1.5 million safe deliveries in humanitarian crisis-affected countries
  • To provide 3 million girls with UNFPA-supported prevention or protection services and care related to child, early and forced marriage

Thanks to the support of Partners at Core, UNFPA is able to expand rights and choices for all and reach the most vulnerable women, girls and young people across the world. Together, we are making great strides towards zero unmet need for family planning, zero preventable maternal deaths, and zero gender-based violence and harmful practices.
